We currently have challenging opportunities for highly motivated individuals to fill the role of Quality Control Editor (QCE). QCEs contribute to researchers' success by ensuring consistent, high-quality language editing for every manuscript that we return to our customers.

QCEs have expert knowledge of our internal quality standards and demonstrate versatility in diverse subject areas. They apply their intellectual versatility and academic experience across all disciplines, with our most common fields being clinical, physical, and life sciences. They are independent, intelligent, adaptable, and team-oriented. QCEs are service-focused, with high levels of personal accountability and excellent time management skills. Our remote team is highly interactive and supportive, but QCEs also work for long periods of time independently.

What do QCEs do?

  • Provide quality control for manuscripts edited by contract editors via targeted, triage-style language editing
  • Work from home (or anywhere with reliable internet), with the option to work from our open office in vibrant downtown Durham, NC
  • Use their knowledge of our operations and their individual strengths to contribute to business-wide needs, including service delivery analyses, quality audits, and cross-divisional special projects
  • Serve as experts in various areas of service delivery, such as answering technical or editing questions, quality assessments, or matching customer manuscripts with contract editors

Data Analyst (Organic Chemistry)

Research Square is a network of academics and professionals dedicated to helping international researchers publish their findings. We provide solutions for researchers that include manuscript services to improve the quality of their research papers, and tools to facilitate intellectual discovery.

We are currently providing technical, administrative, and editorial support for a leading U.S.- based organic chemistry scholarly journal and have an opening for a Data Analyst to work closely with the journal’s Editor-in-Chief office, domestic & internationally located editorial staff, and author community.  You will be able to work from home, but must be available to come to our office in downtown Durham for training and periodic team meetings.

Job Duties include:

  • Assess experimental procedures and compound characterization data in submitted manuscripts for completeness, consistency, and compliance with journal data-reporting requirements.
  • Use software tools to check single-crystal X-ray diffraction structural data in crystallographic information framework format for syntax errors and data quality.
  • Interpret original NMR, HPLC, HRMS, and elemental analysis data
  • Assess whether authors of have thoroughly addressed the issues that have been raised during the peer review process by reviewers, editors, and candidate’s data checking.
  • Respond to editor and author queries about data-reporting requirements.
  • Search the chemical literature using SciFinder for submitted manuscripts if there is a potential issue with a manuscript/SI related directly to data.
  • Assist editors in investigating possible ethical violations involving technical data.
  • Recommend annual updates to the manuscript preparation and submission requirements in the journal's Guidelines for Authors and share with the Coordinating Editor. Coordinate proposed changes with editors and journal production staff. Work with Coordinating Editor to update the content of the journal's author-information webpages to match changes in requirements and policy.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in organic chemistry or M.S. with 5+ years in an organic chemistry laboratory.
  • Knowledge of organic compound nomenclature and familiarity with ACS Style Guide standards of chemical technical writing
  • Working knowledge of chromatographic, spectroscopic, and other common methods used for isolating and characterizing organic compounds; knowledge of basic crystallography and/or computational chemistry a plus
  • Competence with databases, email, Microsoft Office, SciFinder and Web-based applications
  • Strong communication skills
  • Highly organized with the ability to multi-task and problem-solve

American Journal Experts (AJE) provides language editing, translation, formatting, and peer review services to international customers and publishing partners. We are currently looking for highly motivated, detail-oriented individuals to fill the role of Academic Translation Advisor (ATA) for the Chinese translation team. This is a great opportunity to get involved in a fast-growth business that is helping researchers around the world succeed. This position is full time, and we are located in Durham, North Carolina.  Please note that team meetings, customer deadlines, and other company events fall during normal business hours; thus, availability during this time is required.

ATAs are responsible for maintaining the high quality and accuracy of our translations, while serving as the liaison between the contract translator and the customer. To perform these tasks effectively, ATAs must be fluent and have research experience in both languages, be fair and honest managers, and be effective communicators. The ATA is the core of our translation service, and the quality of the work performed by the person in this position is critical to the success of our service.

Job Requirements

  • Fluency in Chinese and English, preferably including technical/research experience in both languages

We are growing quickly and will be supporting editorial operations for a number of major academic journals. As a Peer Review Coordinator (PRC) at Research Square, you will coordinate peer review on prepublication manuscripts in life sciences-related fields, ensuring that high-quality reviews are received in a timely fashion. Additional responsibilities will focus on checking manuscripts to determine whether they meet certain guidelines, from straightforward information (e.g., valid author email addresses) to more complex scientific or publishing-related questions (e.g., valid research question, data permissions). Research Square is a remote-friendly workplace and this role is open to all candidates within the US. 

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • holds a Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) in a life sciences field with 2+ years of research/publishing experience

Our Academic Editors have a strong background in academic research and stellar editing skills. AEs bring their experiences in academia and in the lab to bear in producing high-quality edits of academic manuscripts in fields related to their research experience, directly connecting to our mission of helping researchers succeed. The AE position is a challenging one as it entails delivering a high volume of consistently high quality edits (several manuscripts per day); it requires a combination of strong editing and time management skills as well as expertise in a specific field of study.

Many AEs are remote employees who participate in regular videoconference meetings with their manager and team and enjoy strong bonds with their remote and local colleagues.
