Alfred University New RA Hire

The Resident Assistant (RA), Head Resident Assistant (HRA), or Residential Educator (RE) are undergraduate staff members employed by the Office of Residence Life. They are the principal student leaders on the floors within the Alfred University Residence Halls. RAs/HRAs/REs are responsible for establishing and maintaining an atmosphere that will promote the social, educational, cultural and personal development of AU residential students and community development efforts guided by their Resident Director (RD), the residential curriculum, and the department’s Ethic of Care. Given the high standards of this position, it is essential that a RAs/HRAs/REs possess a genuine concern for others, including being highly visible within their living community, a desire to serve our diverse populations by being welcoming and approachable, set a good example in attitude and general role modeling, and communicate well with others. RAs report directly to their RD, who reports to a Central Staff Member, and ultimately the Director of Residence Life. RAs/HRAs/Res must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and remain in overall good academic and judicial standing.

Contract Period: The RA/HRA/RE position is a one-year student leadership opportunity with a contract period running for the complete academic year, from August 9, 2021 through May 15, 2022. The contract period includes both pre-semester trainings and in-service training sessions. All staff members are required to be in residence and participate fully in all training and operational activities which take place prior to the beginning of each semester as well as in-services and other trainings that take place during the semester. RA/HRA/RE staff are required to be present for and assist with all opening and closing operations within the contract period. In addition to the job responsibilities, time commitments, employment requirements, and qualifications for continued employment outlined in the Job Description, RAs/HRAs/REs are also responsible for the following:

Conditions of employment/expectations:

  1. A positive attitude is a must! Those employed by the Office of Residence Life are expected to be role models in their professional and personal life and represent the students, department, community, and Alfred University in a positive light.
  2. Your compensation as staff member requires attendance and participation in all training and staff activities. Failure to complete the contract will result in your termination from the position.
  3. Involvement in any outside employment and/or positions of leadership in extracurricular activities must be approved in advance through the Director of Residence Life. Your ability to be involved in any outside employment and/or positions of leadership in extracurricular activities may be limited by the Office of Residence Life due to time constraints; including the high emphasis placed upon academics and the amount of time the position requires.
  4. Attend and participate in pre-semester (August and January) training programs and mid-semester in-service trainings. These training sessions are required. NO consumption of alcohol or drugs (of age or otherwise) during RA training and through opening/move in.
  5. Participate in weekly staff meetings and individual one-on-one meetings with your RD.
  6. Set aside at least 5-10 hours per week, beyond on-call, where you will be available (highly visible) for student contact.
  7. Participate fully in the planning and execution of the residential curriculum and community development (knowing your residents) within your assigned area. You may work with your team to determine a theme and/or create a community within the residence hall.
  8. Abide by all Alfred University rules and regulations, State and Federal Laws. You may NOT be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on-call or performing any other duties. This includes being at the bar while on-call.
  9. Be aware of the power of your status with fellow students. This includes friends, romantic partners and family members that you may be the RA/HRA/RE for. The Office of Residence Life strongly discourages having romantic relations with students on your floor.
  10. Maintain confidentiality of students regarding incidents, roommate conflicts and behaviors of concern. We encourage RAs to “go up, not out” and bring these issues to the RD, not fellow RAs.
  11. Maintain open verbal and written communication with RD and Central Staff members.
  12. Have one weekend a month or two days a month when you are unavailable to students to relax and decompress form the job. Must be approved in advance by your RD.
  13. Other duties as assigned by your RD, central staff members, or the Office of Residence Life; including but not limited to: Admissions Visit Days, Spring and Fall Family Weekends, Hot Dog Day, opening/closing for each break.

    3. Participate in duties assigned to or carried out by the Office of Residence Life (which includes but is not limited to: Admissions Visit Days, Fall and Spring Family Weekends, Hot Dog Day, opening and closing halls, etc.).

  3. Residential Education and Community Development:
    1. Create a positive, enthusiastic atmosphere in the hall, conducive to academic pursuits and social development.
    2. Promote the establishment of a cohesive, self-regulating community environment through the development of self-knowledge, responsibility, and a sense of respect for self and others.
    3. Be familiar with each resident’s names, their academic needs/goals, and concerns.
    4. Create opportunities for students in your living area to meet one another and form connections.
    5. Encourage and promote student involvement in campus activities, clubs, and organizations.
    6. Conduct floor meetings as directed to impart information about opening and closing halls, develop community, discuss issues, and assess needs.

  1. Student Accountability:
    1. Participate in an on-call schedule in which one residence hall staff member is available for each building/area between 9 PM and 8 AM nightly (9 PM – Midnight, Sunday-Thursday and 9 PM – 2 AM Friday and Saturday). Staff will conduct rounds of the building(s). “Splitting” rounds are NOT permitted. Completing the Duty Log each night is required. Following last rounds, the staff member(s) will be available in their residence hall room for the remainder of the duty shift (until 8 AM the following day).
    2. Confront all violations of policies promptly and consistently; follow-up appropriately to all emergency situations, respond in person and assist outside agencies when requested to do so.
    3. Have knowledge of, communicate, and enforce University Policies and Procedures, Residence Hall Policies and Procedures, and New York State Law. In addition, have a working knowledge of the Alfred University Conduct System.

Alfred's School Psychology program was one of the first in the country. For more than 50 years, Alfred has prepared professional school psychologists for practice in schools and related child and family settings. Barn Assistant-Part Time

The Alfred University Libraries seek a forward-thinking and collaborative Collection Management Librarian to join a highly engaged team. We are looking for someone to oversee the continuing development of a dynamic collection that addresses the research needs of our specialized ceramic art and engineering programs along with our comprehensive liberal arts teaching focus. The Collection Management Librarian is a 10-month, tenure-track faculty position reporting to the Dean of Libraries. This librarian will provide leadership, vision, and guidance of the Libraries’ collection management functions including acquisitions, cataloging, serials, gifts, and electronic resources management (ERM) across the two University Libraries, Samuel R. Scholes Library and Herrick Memorial Library. This librarian will serve as the Team Leader for the Alfred University Libraries Collection Management Team, consisting of staff from the two libraries. They will coordinate the collection development activities of library faculty; lead on vendor interactions and relationships; develop policies, procedures, and workflows; gather, report, and analyze collections data; and coordinate on State University of New York (SUNY) consortia-wide initiatives for collection management. This position will be assigned subject-based liaison areas according to interest and/or expertise, and will participate in reference, instruction, and the University Libraries’ Personal Librarian Program.

Required Qualifications:

Job Responsibilities

Collection Management

  • Lead and oversee the AU Libraries Collection Management Team, providing strategic vision, guidance, and day-to-day supervision. Train and supervise three full-time staff members and part-time student assistants.
  • Lead the AU Libraries’ collection development strategy, in coordination with library administration and faculty librarians, to ensure that collections meet the current and future needs of the University.
  • Oversee the Acquisitions and Resources components of the Library Services Platform (Alma), working in coordination with the Systems Team and liaising with SUNY Library Services on relevant initiatives.
  • Oversee the acquisition and deaccessioning of all library materials, in both print and electronic formats.

Reporting to the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean will be a strong advocate for the Liberal Arts and Sciences and will further develop connections between the college and other academic programs at Alfred University. Within a shared governance context, the Dean is responsible for leading strategic planning for the College and for facilitating, promoting, directing, and supporting the College's academic and financial affairs.

Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned doctorate or terminal degree in one of the academic areas represented in the College and a teaching and research record commensurate with a tenured appointment at a teaching-centered college.

Environmental Health and Safety Manager

  • Responsible for management of campus solid, hazardous, universal, electronic and regulated medical waste streams to include: packing and loading, scheduling pickups, invoice processing and business management of hazardous waste, inventory management, record keeping, filing state reports, signing and tracking manifests, oversee central and satellite accumulation areas, assure campus compliance for hazardous waste handling, work with employees and students regarding proper waste handling procedures, collect, inspect and dispose of dump materials.

Maintenance Supervisor

The Maintenance Supervisor will supervise and coordinate the activities of skilled trades employees and other workers engaged in a variety of mechanical, electrical and building maintenance activities. Working supervisors may perform tasks in a variety of the trades. They will monitor and adjust computerized building controls for HVAC systems. They will make regular reports to Ceramics Physical Plant Director concerning maintenance, operation and repair of facilities; lead maintenance and repair activities of Ceramics Physical personnel. This is a 24 hour on-call position.

Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain HVAC building controls. Maintain air handling equipment (VAV boxes, belts, motors, filters, etc.).
  • Supervises and plans the work for subordinate staff.
  • Reviews job orders, blueprints, and specifications and, as required, visits the project site to determine dimensions, materials and labor required to complete the project.
  • Prepares rough sketches or plans to scale from oral or written instructions.

Public Safety Officer (Certified)

The Public Safety Officer is responsible for the supervision of the Public  Safety Student Staff on his/her shift and for directing the shift operation for all security and safety matters within the Public Safety Office and on Alfred University property. The position requires the protection of University property and to maintain order on campus. The Public Safety Officer responds to campus emergencies and provides services in the area of University safety, security, crime prevention; including but not limited to University policy and NYS laws, special events, campus information and assistance, parking and traffic control.  The Public Safety Officer also must work well within the Division of Student  Affairs and have a positive interaction with students,  faculty  and staff.  This position  has been evaluated for compliance with the Fair Labor  Standards  Act and  is subject to premium  pay for all hours worked in excess of 40 in a payroll week.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform law enforcement and public safety activities in a manner which does not compromise the Alfred University atmosphere of academic and individual freedom.
  • Enforce criminal law, university policies and procedures to protect persons and property from willful or accidental injury or damage.

Saxon Success Coordinator/Mental Health Counselor
Location: Alfred, NYDepartment: Wellness Center

The Saxon Success Coordinator/Mental Health Counselor provides coordination of the Saxon Success program, which includes but is not limited to recruiting, hiring, and leading a team of graduate students who offer support, guidance, consultation, and advising/coaching for the undergraduate students assigned to the program. The coordinator will also provide a range of services to help the Alfred University community meet the psychological, educational, and developmental needs of students.

Responsibilities include individual and/or group counseling for students; crisis response; participation in the after-hours on-call rotation; consultation for students, faculty/staff, parents, etc.; outreach/programming; training; and committee participation. This position is held within an integrated center, which consists of a multidisciplinary team of counselors and medical professionals (e.g., nurse practitioners and nurses).

 

Formal Education: Must possess a Master's Degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work by start date.

Certification/License: National Certified Counselor certification through the National Board of Certified Counselors preferred. Temporary permit in the State of New York. Licensed Mental Health Counselor or Licensed Professional Counselor preferred.

Experience:

  • At least one year of experience as a mental health clinician.
  • An employment history of at least two years in a supervisory role or job responsibilities that demonstrate progression in leadership.
  • Experience counseling special populations, to include those at-risk for suicide, substance abuse, and victims of sexual assault.
  • Experience in case management or coordination of services.
  • A demonstrated understanding of integrated service delivery and the wellness model.
  • Experience treating diverse clients or interest in working with individuals from diverse social, cultural or socio-cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of short-term counseling models, triage, risk assessment and crisis intervention.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and an ability to collaborate with a diverse group of campus partners including colleagues, staff/faculty, parents, students, and community stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of ethical, legal and university standards and regulations.
  • A demonstrated ability to make good decisions in a high stress environment with a strong ethical compass.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in college counseling, advising, or residence life.
  • Knowledge and training working with historically underrepresented or under-served student populations, individuals of diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of the dynamics of socialization, displacement, transition, oppression, internalized oppression, and accommodation as it relates to the emotional well-being of an individual.
  • Interest or experience working with student athletes a plus.

 

Additional Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge or experience with scheduling and documentation in Medicat or other electronic health record system. Knowledge related to emergency hospitalization procedures and community resources preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral, and Treatment (SBIRT) model.

Summer Programs Coordinator

The Division of Expanded Media at Alfred University seeks candidates for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Animation. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to experimental animation practices using digital animation tools. Experimental approaches to artmaking of interest include but are not limited to: single channel animation, storyboarding, installation, virtual reality, multi­ channel projection, and experimental narrative. Candidates must demonstrate a knowledge of 3D and/or 2D animation practices and have teaching experience that includes hands-on investigations of animation practices.

  • Minimum qualifications include an M.F.A. in 3D and/or 2D Animation.
